April 2008

Researchers at HP Labs create the memristor — short for memory resistor - could make it possible to develop far more energy-efficient computing systems with memories that retain information even after the power is off, so there’s no wait for the system to boot up after turning the computer on. It may even be possible to create systems with some of the pattern-matching abilities of the human brain.

Engineers could develop a new kind of computer memory that would supplement and eventually replace today’s commonly used dynamic random access memory (D-RAM). Computers using conventional D-RAM lack the ability to retain information once they are turned off. When power is restored to a D-RAM-based computer, a slow, energy-consuming “boot-up” process is necessary to retrieve data stored on a magnetic disk required to run the system.

Memristor-based computers wouldn’t require that process, using less power and possibly increasing system resiliency and reliability. Chua believes the memristor could have applications for computing, cell phones, video games - anything that requires a lot of memory without a lot of battery-power drain.

As for the human brain-like characteristics, memristor technology could one day lead to computer systems that can remember and associate patterns in a way similar to how people do. This could be used to substantially improve facial recognition technology or to provide more complex biometric recognition systems that could more effectively restrict access to personal information. These same pattern-matching capabilities could enable appliances that learn from experience and computers that can make decisions.

A spidery fungus with a voracious appetite for military uniforms and canvas tents could hold the key to improvements in the production of biofuels, a team of government, academic and industry researchers has announced.

The fungus T. reesei rose to dubious fame during World War II when military leaders discovered it was responsible for rapid deterioration of clothing and tents in the South Pacific. Named after Dr. Elwyn T. Reese, who, with colleagues, originally isolated the hungry fungus, T. reesei was later identified as a source of industrial enzymes and a role model for the conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose–plant fibers–into simple sugars.

The organism uses enzymes it creates to break down human-indigestible fibers of plants into the simplest form of sugar, known as a monosaccharide. The fungus then digests the sugars as food.

Do you have the ability to be a top-notch journalist? Could you write the sort of articles the Guardian would be happy to publish? Here is the chance for your work to be published alongside some of the best journalism in the UK.

The Guardian, in partnership with eight UK-based international non-government organisations (NGOs), wants to find exciting new voices in journalism. We are looking for anyone who is willing to rise to the challenge of writing about some of the most crucial issues facing the developing world today - issues that are often overlooked or underrepresented by the media.

The challenge is to write an article of 650 to 1,000 words by May 6 on an aspect of global poverty that deserves greater media exposure - from safe motherhood to sanitation, youth governance to sexually transmitted infections. The 16 best writers will be selected from a longlist of about 40 entrants, all of whom will have their articles published online at guardian.co.uk.

The two strands for entry are:

· For professional freelance journalists (people who have been published before - excluding student journalists - but who are not employees of media organisations).

· For amateurs, including students. Anyone who is not a professional journalist is welcome to enter.

·For more details on all aspects of the competition, visit

We’ve got Google Earth and Google Sky. Next up will be a map of the world below sea level–Google Ocean. The company has assembled an advisory group of oceanography experts to create a 3D oceanographic map.

The tool–for now called Google Ocean, is expected to be similar to other 3D online mapping applications. People will be able to see the underwater topography, called bathymetry, search for particular spots or attractions, and navigate through the digital environment by zooming and panning.

Google Ocean will feature a basic layer that shows the depth of the sea floor and will serve as a spatial framework for additional data, sources said, adding that Google plans to try to fill in some areas of the map with high-resolution images for more detail.

Additional data will be displayed as overlying layers that depict phenomena like weather patterns, currents, temperatures, shipwrecks, coral reefs, and algae blooms, much like the National Park Service and NASA provide additional data for Google Earth and Google Sky.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

ScienceDaily (May 2, 2008)

Scientists confirm computer model predictions that oxygen-depleted zones in tropical oceans are expanding, possibly because of climate change. An international team of physical oceanographers including a researcher from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego has discovered that oxygen-poor regions of tropical oceans are expanding as the oceans warm, limiting the areas in which predatory fishes and other marine organisms can live or enter in search of food.

The study, “Expanding Oxygen-Minimum Zones in the Tropical Oceans,” appears in the May 2 edition of the journal Science.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The case of Darfur, a forbidding piece of sun-parched real estate in the southern part of Sudan, illustrates the new Cold War over oil, where the dramatic rise in China’s oil demand to fuel its booming growth has led Beijing to embark on an aggressive policy of—ironically– dollar diplomacy. With its more than $1.3 trillion in mainly US dollar reserves at the Peoples’ National Bank of China, Beijing is engaging in active petroleum geopolitics. Africa is a major focus, and in Africa, the central region between Sudan and Chad is priority. This is defining a major new front in what, since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, is a new Cold War between Washington and Beijing over control of major oil sources. So far Beijing has played its cards a bit more cleverly than Washington. Darfur is a major battleground in this high-stakes contest for oil control.
