In a linear market-based model of commerce, it is the goods that are commodified. In a process oriented network model, it is human time itself that becomes commodified. 2009 – a year when arctic ice was melting faster than ever before and multiple crises -food, energy, recession or pandemic flu – called for global cooperation on an unprecedented level. At the same time, peacekeepers served in missions around the world and the fight against hunger and poverty continued.

It was a year when UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon travelled to Gaza to witness firsthand the damage to the UN compound after it was bombed in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He also travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo and reminded the world that sexual violence against women there, and everywhere, was an abomination and had to be stopped. Despite multiple conflicts – in Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan or Somalia -there was hope that an old remnant of the Cold War would finally melt, when the Presidents of Russia and the USA expressed their strong desire in the Security Council to cut down their nuclear arsenals. At the same time nuclear ambitions by Iran and North Korea worried the world and caused sharp criticism by world leaders in the Security Council.

2009 will also be remembered as a year when the world finally was trying to reach a follow up agreement to the Kyoto Protocol to lower emission rates and stop global warming. In the Maldives, the cabinet met under water for a meeting – demonstrating the vulnerability of their small island state to sea level rise.

Better Place is a project of Shai Agassi, he said a mission, to achieve sustainable transportation, global energy independence and freedom from oil. Better  Place does not makes cars but embraces a joint venture with Nissan – Renault which are building zero-emission electric cars and exchangeable batteries.

Better Place network will provide fully-automated battery exchange stations: charging spots, battery switching stations, and software that automates the experience. Better Place had already launched its network in Denmark, Australia, Hawaii and Northern California.

In tutto il mondo, Paesi ricchi e poveri, è in atto da tempo una lotta fondamentale tra la società civile e le compagnie private (come le francesi Vivendi Environment, Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux e Saur o la tedesca Rwe/Thames water) contro la privatizzazione delle risorse idriche e per rivendicare il diritto all’acqua come uno dei fondamentali diritti umani.

La trasformazione dell’acqua in merce è la strategia strenuamente perseguita da organismi sovranazionali come il WTO (World Trade Organization), la Banca mondiale e il Fondo Monetario Internazionale che da tempo legano la concessione dei prestiti alla deregulation e alla privatizzazione dei servizi, tra cui anche la fornitura dell’acqua.

Durante il round di negoziati del WTO a Doha nel 2001 si parlò esplicitamente di eliminazione delle “barriere tariffarie e non tariffarie sui beni e servizi ambientali”, tra cui ovviamente rientra anche l’acqua. Alle risorse idriche come bene commerciabile fa esplicito riferimento anche il NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement).

Nel 1998 il “Comitato internazionale per il contratto mondiale sull’acqua” si è riunito a Lisbona e ha proclamato il Manifesto dell’acqua che si conclude con l’affermazione: “L’acqua è patrimonio dell’umanità.”

Il Parlamento Europeo già nel 2002 aveva recepito queste sollecitazioni, ribadendole nel 2003. Il 15 marzo 2006 è stata approvata una risoluzione in vista del quarto “Forum mondiale dell’acqua”, affermando che “l’acqua è un bene comune dell’umanità e come tale l’accesso all’acqua costituisce un diritto fondamentale della persona umana”.

Secondo l’Unesco nel 2000 sono morte 2.2 milioni di persone per mancanza d’acqua o infermità ad essa legate e fra 1.1 e 1.3 miliardi non avevano l’accesso all’acqua potabile. A Firenze, nel 2003, il Forum alternativo mondiale dell’acqua, le cifre erano ancora peggiori: 2.4 miliardi di persone senza l’accesso all’acqua potabile né ai servizi sanitari minimi, 30 mila morti ogni giorno per le stesse ragioni. Come dieci 11 settembre ogni giorno. Nel 2025, l’Unesco sostiene, nel suo scenario più ottimista, che 3.5 miliardi di persone soffriranno scarsità d’acqua. Quelli più pessimisti parlano di 7 miliardi su una popolazione mondiale di 8 miliardi. Per la Red Agroforestal Chaco Argentina, la domanda totale di acqua raddoppia nel mondo ogni 20 anni, due volte più rapidamente dell’incremento della popolazione: nel 2025 la domanda di acqua fresca sarà del 56% superiore alla sua disponibilità.
Forse catastrofismo eccessivo. Ma di certo nessuno potrà negare l’importanza strategica dell’acqua. Che fa capire l’interesse dei paesi forti a garantirsi il controllo delle fonti, delle grandi compagnie transnazionali a farne una mercanzia come le altre, dei popoli e (certi) governi a impedire che venga gettata sulla roulette del mercato globalizzato.

E’ passato nel silenzio quasi generale il decreto legge che prevede la privatizzazione dell’acqua pubblica in Italia. Il 6 agosto il Parlamento italiano ha infatti votato con l’appoggio dell’opposizione – e in particolare del Pd – l’articolo 23bis della legge numero 133/2008 , cioè il decreto legge 112 – la cosidetta ‘finanziaria triennale’ del ministro Tremonti – che affida “il conferimento della gestione dei servizi pubblici locali, in via ordinaria, a favore di imprenditori o di società in qualunque forma costituite individuati mediante procedure competitive ad evidenza pubblica”. Ciò al fine – afferma il decreto – “di favorire la più ampia diffusione dei principi di concorrenza, di libertà di stabilimento e di libera prestazione dei servizi di tutti gli operatori economici interessati alla gestione di servizi di interesse generale in ambito locale”. In altre parole si spalanca la via alla privatizzazione dell’acqua pubblica …

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) was called for by the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2000. Initiated in 2001, the objective of the MA was to assess the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and the scientific basis for action needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of those systems and their contribution to human well-being. The MA has involved the work of more than 1,360 experts worldwide. Their findings, contained in five technical volumes and six synthesis reports, provide a state-of-the-art scientific appraisal of the condition and trends in the world’s ecosystems and the services they provide (such as clean water, food, forest products, flood control, and natural resources) and the options to restore, conserve or enhance the sustainable use of ecosystems.

1. Over the past 50 years, humans have changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively than in any comparable period of time in human history, largely to meet rapidly growing demands for food, fresh water, timber, fiber and fuel. This has resulted in a substantial and largely irreversible loss in the diversity of life on Earth.
2. The changes that have been made to ecosystems have contributed to substantial net gains in human well-being and economic development, but these gains have been achieved at growing costs in the form of the degradation of many ecosystem services, increased risks of nonlinear changes, and the exacerbation of poverty for some groups of people. These problems, unless addressed, will substantially diminish the benefits that future generations obtain from ecosystems.
3. The degradation of ecosystem services could grow significantly worse during the first half of this century and is a barrier to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
4. The challenge of reversing the degradation of ecosystem while meeting increasing demands for services can be partially met under some scenarios considered by the MA, but will involve significant changes in policies, institutions and practices that are not currently under way. Many options exist to conserve or enhance specific ecosystem services in ways that reduce negative trade-offs or that provide positive synergies with other ecosystem services.

The bottom line of the MA findings is that human actions are depleting Earth’s natural capital, putting such strain on the environment that the ability of the planet’s ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted. At the same time, the assessment shows that with appropriate actions it is possible to reverse the degradation of many ecosystem services over the next 50 years, but the changes in policy and practice required are substantial and not currently underway.

Il Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (Valutazione degli Ecosistemi del Millennio), il cui acronimo utilizzato generalmente è MA, è un progetto di ricerca che ha cercato di identificare i cambiamenti subiti dagli ecosistemi e di sviluppare degli scenari per il futuro, basandosi sul trend dei cambiamenti. È stato lanciato nel 2001 con il supporto delle Nazioni Unite ed è costato 24 milioni di dollari.

I risultati, pubblicati nel 2005 dopo quattro anni di lavoro e il coinvolgimento di più di mille esperti e scienziati di quasi tutto il mondo, hanno affermato che il mondo sta degradando le proprie risorse naturali, evidenziando che le conseguenze di questa degradazione cresceranno in maniera significativa nei prossimi 50 anni.

Risultati principali

1. Negli ultimi 50 anni l’uomo ha cambiato gli ecosistemi con una velocità ed una forza come mai era successo in periodi precedenti della storia umana. Le cause principali sono state la crescente necessità di cibo, acqua dolce, legname, fibre e fonti energetiche. Questo impatto ha provocato nella perdita irreversibile di una certa quantità di biodiversità nel pianeta.

2. I cambiamenti sugli ecosistemi hanno contribuito ad un aumento del “benessere” del pianeta, perlomeno dal punto di vista “umano”, nonostante vi siano stati enormi costi, tra i quali i principali sono:

* degrado della capacità degli ecosistemi di fornire servizi all’umanità;
* aumento del rischio di cambiamenti “non lineari”, e quindi imprevedibili;
* aumento del livello di povertà di alcuni settori della popolazione.

3. Il processo di degradazione degli ecosistemi, e la conseguente diminuita capacità di fornire servizi, potrebbe crescere significativamente durante i prossimi 50 anni, creando una barriera al processo per ridurre la povertà nel mondo e per il raggiungimento degli Obiettivi del Millennio per lo sviluppo

4. La sfida di invertire il processo di degradazione degli ecosistemi e, allo stesso tempo, assolvere alle crescenti necessità di cibo ed altri servizi, è parzialmente prevista dagli scenari sviluppati dal Millenniium Ecosystem Assessment ma richiederebbe dei significativi cambiamenti nelle politiche, nelle istituzioni e nelle pratiche in atto.

Alcuni risultati specifici

* 60% dei servizi ecosistemici del pianeta sono stati degradati.
* Dei 24 ecosistemi valutati come campione, 15 sono stati valutati come danneggiati.
* Circa un quarto della superficie terrestre del pianeta è coltivata.
* I popoli della terra usano fra il 40% e il 50% dell’acqua dolce corrente disponibile sul pianeta. La raccolta di acqua è raddoppiata negli ultimi 40 anni.
* Circa un quarto degli stock di pesci sono sovrasfruttati.
* Dal 1980 circa il 35% delle mangrovie è stato perso.
* Circa il 20% dei coralli è stato perso in soli 20 anni, il 20% è stato degradato.
* L’inquinamento da nutrienti ha causato l’eutrofizzazione delle acque e la perdita di molti ambienti costieri.
* Il tasso di estinzione delle specie è di circa 100 – 1000 volte superiore il tasso naturale.

Alcune raccomandazioni

* Eliminare i supporti finanziari all’agricoltura, alla pesca e alle risorse energetiche che provocano danni all’ambiente (cosiddetti “incentivi perversi”).
* Incoraggiare i proprietari terrieri a gestire le loro terre in modo da incentivare la fornitura di servizi ecosistemici quali generazione di acqua dolce e deposito di carbonio.
* Incentivare il lavoro di protezione di aree da attività di sviluppo, specialmente negli oceani.

I Gruppi di Acquisto Solidale (GAS) sono gruppi di acquisto che partono un approccio critico al consumo e che vogliono applicare il principio di equità e solidarietà ai propri acquisti. I criteri che guidano la scelta dei fornitori (pur differenti da gruppo a gruppo) in genere sono all’insegna della qualità del prodotto, dell’impatto ambientale totale (prodotti locali, alimenti da agricoltura biologica od equivalenti, imballaggi a rendere)

I principi di equità e solidarietà si estendono:

* ai membri del GAS;
* ai produttori e loro lavoratori;
* ai popoli del sud del mondo;
* al rispetto dell’ambiente.

Nel vasto panorama dei GAS si trovano associazioni riconosciute, associazioni non riconosciute (fra cui numerosi sono i gruppi informali), cooperative del settore (botteghe del mondo) che trovano in questa forma un modo intelligente per acquistare quei prodotti che servono ai soci. La storia dei Gruppi di Acquisto inizia nel 1994 a Fidenza e prosegue nel 1996 quando viene pubblicata la “Guida al Consumo Critico” dal Centro Nuovo Modello di Sviluppo, dove vengono rilasciate informazioni sul comportamento delle imprese più importanti al fine di guidare la scelta del consumatore. Nel 1997 nasce la rete di gruppi d’acquisto. Il 5 novembre 2007 la Commissione di Bilancio del Senato ha approvato un emendamento alla legge finanziaria relativo agli aspetti fiscali dei GAS, che chiarisce il fatto che si tratta di attività di acquisto e distribuzione agli aderenti svolta dai GAS costituisce attività “non commerciale”.

Wholesale prices farmers get for their produce are very low, often near the cost of production. Farmers who sell direct to the public without going through a middle man get a better price. It can be shown that the preservation of farmland is important for the health of the environment and water supply. According to the American Farmland Trust, sustainable and managed farms conserve soil and clean water and provide a habitat for wildlife. Moreover, modern farmers’ markets help maintain important social ties, linking rural and urban populations and even close neighbors in mutually rewarding exchange.

Media literacy education provides tools to help people critically analyze messages to detect propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming, and to understand how structural features, such as media ownership, or its funding model, affect the information presented.

Media literacy aims to enable people to be skillful creators and producers of media messages, both to facilitate an understanding as to the strengths and limitations of each medium, as well as to create independent media. Media literacy is an expanded conceptualization of literacy. By transforming the process of media consumption into an active and critical process, people gain greater awareness of the potential for misrepresentation and manipulation, and understand the role of mass media and participatory media in constructing views of reality.

The Center for Media Literacy in Santa Monica, California, created the five core concepts of media literacy, using the Canada’s eight “Key Concepts” for media literacy as a guide. The Five Core Concepts are:
